French court has ruled in favour of Internet gambling companies where a Malta based hourse betting company was not allowed to take bets from Frech people but they can.

The decision taken by the french court makes it very clear that any EU licensed online gaming company can take bets from French people, avoiding state monopoly.

Last month the European Commission threatened to sue France, Sweden and Greece for blocking foreign betting companies. Welfare groups in New South Wales have expressed concern about a new law allowing clubs with poker machines to develop adjoining retail space.

The legislation is aimed at boosting club revenues and repeals a previous law, under which pokies were banned in or near shopping centres.

There will be a cap on the number of machines allowed in the new venues and the club and shopping centre will have to have separate entrances.

State Council of Social Service acting director Michelle Burrell says malls should not be placed next door to clubs.

"If the ATM machines that are available in that shopping centre so closely located to the club can hand out credit card cash advances, that's a significant gain for the clubs in New South Wales," she said.

"At the moment you can't get a credit card advance at an ATM in a club, so that's just one of the practical implications of mixing up your shopping day with your gambling day."
